About Us

We are a group of about 45 Calgarians with a passion for silent flight. On a typical day the field will be full of airplanes, ranging from beginner planes all the way up to competition models. We welcome all types of sailplanes as well as electric climb and glide sailplane models, though we do not allow nitro- or gas-powered models at our Red Deer Lake site. The models run the full gamut from old timer electrics, hand launch gliders to scale giants, and Gentle Ladies to full-on F3B sailplanes. We also love the slope, where EPP combat models and speed machines join the fray.

The club's main flying field is located at Lloyd Park (Red Deer Lake), just west of Spruce Meadows on highway 22X. Turn south off Highway 22X at the Red Deer Lake School and follow the road down to Lloyd Park. Keep heading south until the road reaches a turn-around. Here, you'll see a dirt road/trail going west off the end of the loop. This is the way to the field, just west of the picnic area on the dry lake bed. Please respect the speed limit of the park, which is 30 kph.

Here's a map to help it all make sense:

And a picture to let you see what you'll find when you get there:

Instructors

Our training program is very extensively supported by the CRCSS membership, as we're always looking to help new members in learning to fly. We pair off new students with individual instructors, though help is usually available most days during the summer on a drop-in basis. Here is a brief list of tasks (Word Format) that your instructor may use to help show you how you've been developing. Students are also encouraged to keep a log of their flights - it's a great thing to be able to go back and read years later. The following people have volunteered as instructors for the club:

Membership

Membership dues for CRCSS are assessed on an annual basis, and are $100 (2006, Cdn) per year for adult members ($75 for members renewing from 2005). Additionally, insurance through the Model Aviation Association of Canada (MAAC) is required to fly at CRCSS sites or events, and runs $55.00 (2005, Cdn) per year for adult members. Junior member and Family rates are available for both, and our American friends are welcome to substitute AMA coverage where applicable. New members are encouraged to download the following forms, both in Adobe Acrobat format:
