Here's
a listing of the different types of
models
that our members fly around town.

Thermal Duration (TD) Sailplanes
These
are the real workhorses of the club during the
summer
months. We can launch sailplanes at our Red
Deer
Lake field with winches, high-starts, or even by
electric
aerotowing.
The
sky's the limit - laaauunching!!!
Hand Launch Gliders
Called
HLGs or DLGs (discus launch gliders), these tiny
sailplanes
are fly-anywhere fun in a 4-20 oz package.
Great
for serious competiton or even that ten minute fix
after
work, HLGs are becoming increasingly popular at CRCSS
because
they require no field equipment to get them airborne.
Scale Sailplanes
Where sexy lines meet high performance.
These
are semi- or completely scale replicas of full-size
sailplanes,
and are absolutely beautiful in flight.
Scale
sailplanes can be anywhere from 1.5 meters to
over
10 meters in span...how big is your car?
Slope Soarers
So
you're all set to head to the thermal field, only to look out
the
window and see that the wind is howling.
A
good day to cut the lawn? Heck no, big winds bring big
fun
on the slope!
Almost
any sailplane can be flown on the slope, but
you'll
have to ask us where the best spots are ;)
Electric-boosted Gliders
For
those who want freedom from having to lug launch
equipment
out every time they fly, powerful electric motors
are
now available.
Climb and glide electrics are welcome at CRCSS, pylon racers or helicopters are prohibited. In addition, nitro engines are also prohibited.
Winch?!? We don't need no stinkin' winch!
Training Gliders
In
the past, everyone had to learn on fairly fragile wooden
trainers
simply because there were no other options.
With
the discovery of EPP (expanded polypropylene) foam,
however,
gliders can be built that will bounce when crashed.
Simply
pick them up and dust them off, and you're ready
to
go again in no time.
We have three club trainers that are always available
to first-time pilots - now you have no excuses!
Contest Days
Every
couple of months CRCSS organizes a contest so that
members
can test their skills in friendly competition.
Although
in past years the word "contest" has seemed to
cause
people to run for the hills, members are coming around.
These days are great fun, and many different formats are used.
